Adam Grainger

Forth

Adam Grainger is a Curator, Artist, and Organiser. He co-founded Forth, which he continues to co-curate from the Caretaker’s House at Primary.

In his curatorial practice Adam is keen to facilitate the support and development of artists on an individual level, often in the form of solo exhibitions and residencies which underpin the programme at Forth. Outside of this he acts as Studio Manager at One Thoresby Street, a fellow Nottingham based studios. In both of these roles he works to foster communal support at the artist-led level.

During the ongoing pandemic he has set up whorling.net alongside collaborator Chloë Laycock. The platform, a response to the lack of access to exhibitions for artists and audiences alike, has gone on to present over 100 artists from 18 countries thanks to its constantly expanding, recommendation based curation.

In his own work Adam seeks to explore an irreparable sense of loss for past and future histories, and longing for other worlds and ways of being, through a nihilistic framework derived from Black Metal and other extreme subcultures. This often manifests as enquiries into the landscape and our environment, through the amalgamation of research, video, writing, found imagery and installation.

In 2021 Adam will be presenting Ellen Angus’ Cater 2 U at Four/Four, and is taking part in International House of Grot, a year long project initiated by Craig David Parr.

He curated Emily Stollery’s Tangible Nothings and Momentary Happenings (2020), the culmination of Stollery’s involvement with Pangaea Sculptors’ Centre’s Sculpture Production Award. He also curated Katharina Fitz’s When Seams Become Audible at One Thoresby Street, Nottingham, presenting work reinterpreting their building as part of a production award given at New Art Exchange’s NAE Open 2019.

He participated in Kunstpodium T’s Apprentice/Master Project, exhibiting in Give Me Something to Hold On To at RUIS, Nijmegen (2019). Past curated projects include: Chatum Tanning’s As If Nobody’s Watching (2019) and A Billboard Facing a Wall (2019), a group show by Peter Eason Daniels, Rosa Klerkx and Allegra Salandini.

Prior to founding Forth in 2018, Adam interned with Bruce Asbestos at Trade Gallery, Nottingham.
