Ismail Khokon is a British-Bangladeshi, socially engaged visual artist based in Nottingham, specialising in documentary photography. His artistic practice amplifies the voices of marginalised communities, focusing on shaping the regional arts ecology and supporting isolated and vulnerable individuals. As an active studio member at Primary Gallery, Ismail contributes to the visual arts community, fostering creative dialogue and social impact. Recently appointed as a trustee for First Art in Ashfield, a priority area for Arts Council England, he also serves as trustee and environmental lead at BACKLIT Gallery, and is a Steering Group Member for the Contemporary Visual Arts Network in the East Midlands.He is also a Co-Production Creative Leader at the Justice Museum in Nottingham. Ismail completed a Reshaping Governance residency at New Art Exchange and participated in the Curate residency program.
He has been a panellist for NAE Open 2023 and the UKNA New Artist Collective in Derby 2024 . Currently, he is an associate artist at Mansfield Museum, where he will curate and facilitate a participatory project exploring human connections with trees and memories. Ismail is aware of the plant conservation movement , and is a certified climate-aware photographer, awarded by the Carbon Literacy Programme and supported by the Red Eye Photography Network.
