Line Nilsen

Studio C1

Line Nilsen is a designer, artist and hand weaver.

Line makes contemporary woven textiles, informed by artisanal process, craft and design. She believes that the objects we choose to live with enrich our lives with emotion and create connections between us. Her practice focuses on process, making, colour, and material.

Line’s current body of work is an emotional response to the arctic landscape where she grew up, where the extreme absence and presence of light throughout the seasons have strong influence on mind and body. She makes contemporary abstract woven artworks - minimal colour studies suggestive of landscapes. Adapting traditional dye techniques, she explores colour to create a sense of place. She hand dyes her warps, often in multiple stages, adding layers of shade to the yarns for depth and movement. By combining mixed material, she achieves texture and tactility to the surface, resulting in work that sits between raw and refined.

Line is a highly skilled multifaceted weaver with great experience in design and textiles. She creates one of a kind woven art, whilst doing bespoke commission weaving, working as a designer, consultant and collaborator. She is a founding member of Weave Studio Nottingham.
