What are artist residencies, why are they good for your practice, and how do you go about approaching them?

John Eng Kiet Bloomfield, Senior Programme Curator at Wysing Arts Centre will join us for a toolkit about artist residencies. Hear John talk about what they are, how Wysing approach residencies, and why they are so important for artists’ development. John will share examples and anecdotes, before opening up for your questions and responses.

This event is hosted by Eastside Projects for the Kaleidoscope Network, a collaboration between Eastside Projects (Birmingham), Primary (Nottingham), Spike Island (Bristol), and The NewBridge Project (Newcastle). Primary residents and members are automatically part of the Kaleidoscope Network and can attend selected events programmed by each partner.

John Eng Kiet Bloomfield joined Wysing in July 2016, where he works as Curator and Acting Head of Programme. He currently oversees the organisation’s programme, including residencies, exhibitions, events, partnership projects, an annual music festival and digital projects. At Wysing, he has curated the exhibitions Wysing Broadcasts, All His Ghosts Must Do My Bidding, more of an avalanche, Warm Worlds and Otherwise and All Channels Open. John also manages the Syllabus programme, a collaboratively produced alternative learning programme that supports ten artists each year.

Before Wysing, John was an editor at Black Dog Publishing alongside which he worked as a freelance curator, developing exhibitions and projects for Arcadia Missa, Flat Time House, MOT International and Tate. John has worked for the British Film Institute and Rich Mix, London and has also worked for the artist Isaac Julien. John has an MA in Film Studies from UCL, London.
