Join us for a screening of Antemasque, a new performance film and sound work made in collaboration by artists Melanie Wheeler and Mihai Bircu.

Melanie began the project during her time as artist-in-residence at Primary as part of the A(st)udio Residency programme (April - July 2023) and the pair have been collaborating, for the first time, since early June 2023.

Antemasque is a 3 part film and sound piece that retells the ancient myth of Medusa, the story of a serpent haired Gorgon with an 'evil' lithifying gaze who is eventually sacrificed and weaponised. The work centers queer desire and familial love in an attempt to reframe the female voice of the antagonist, by exploring entanglements with nature and focusing on the liveliness within rocks, water and the places that they meet.

The event will comprise a screening, reading and discussion.

Artist Bios:

Melanie Wheeler is an interdisciplinary artist and producer based in Nottingham. Her practice moves across installation, sound, film, research and social practice. Fiction, folkloric narratives and public dialogue run through her work which she uses as a means to explore the uncertain territories surrounding class, locality, ecology and social and material histories. Melanie is interested in creative methods of exchange, encouraging participation and collaboration across disciplines and communities, and testing the functions of creative practice to see how different methods affect the way subject and audience interact.

Mihai Bircu is a photographer and filmmaker born in Moldova and based in Nottingham. He is interested in using digital media to explore social interactions, human relationships, nature, portraiture and obscuring the boundaries between traditional image making and contemporary storytelling.
