Join artist Saintly Amok to grind and cook with grains harvested from Primary's garden this autumn. The heritage grains of wheat, barley, oats and rye were sown in spring during the 'Seed Sankalpa' event. This ritual took inspiration from ceremonies carried out by rural farming communities to honour the land and bless seeds and tools for the coming season of cultivation. The grain seeds were provided by Small Food Bakery and carry stories of seed sovereignty and biodiversity in farming.
We have watched the grains growing throughout the summer, and now we'll complete the cycle - saving some seed to plant again and using the rest to grind into flour using small table-top mills and bake with.
During the event we'll be sharing warming drinks and snacks.
Saintly Amok creates participatory performances that resurrect ancient nature-based rituals and reactivate them in a present-day context. Participants are invited to bring their own experiences and knowledge to be shared in a supportive group setting which facilitates meaningful connections with the natural environment and our personal relationship with it. The artist draws inspiration from their own Gujarati heritage, which is rich in symbolism and reinterprets cosmological worldviews to offer alternative perspectives for contemporary culture.
