Project Assistant (freelance role)

31 January, 5pm: Deadline for Expression of Interest.
3 February: Selection confirmed, feedback to applicants.
February – April 2022: Project delivery

Fee: £1050 (7 days @ £150p/d)

Build Create Play is a project working with local families and young people around Ronald Street Playground in Radford. The playground is located over the road from Primary and is currently a neglected space with old play equipment. Nottingham City Council are planning to upgrade the playground in the coming year, and this project aims to bring local people’s voices and ideas in to shape how this space is developed.

Throughout August 2021, we ran a series of workshops with artist Charlotte Tupper and play workers from the Toy Library to work with local families and explore materials, shapes and colours that spark children’s imaginations. These sessions provided play provision through the summer holidays, and helped us to understand how children currently use the playground and imagine ways it could be improved in the future. You can read Charlotte’s blog here.

What we're looking for

Primary is seeking a project assistant to work alongside the lead artist, Charlotte Tupper, on the next phase of the project. We're looking for an assistant artist who is interested in experimental play and public space, and would like to increase their experience of social practice / participatory arts and working with children. This project is an opportunity to support the design and delivery of a series of 5 workshops from February-April 2022, to influence how the playground is developed. This is a paid position suitable for an early career artist-facilitator.

The selected person will demonstrate:

  • Some existing experience of working with children and young people, and an interest in developing this aspect of their practice.

  • A commitment to amplifying young people's voices to shape their neighbourhoods.

  • Willingness to work collaboratively as part of a team to deliver this project.

  • Availability for key project dates (most workshops will happen in school holidays during the afternoon).

The selected artist will have access to mentoring throughout this project, and will be supported to develop a greater understanding of project planning, safeguarding and risk assessment. Primary will support with the planning and delivery of the sessions in line with our Safeguarding policy and current Covid Risk Assessment. Primary requires the Project Assistant to have a current DBS certificate and will support your application and cover costs for one if you do not currently hold one.

We positively encourage people from Black, Asian and ethnically diverse (global majority) backgrounds and those who self-identify as disabled to apply for this opportunity as they are under-represented within our workforce and in arts jobs nationally. We encourage applicants from the local area, who have an existing relationship with the community.
