Nourishment: A Cyclical Programme
In autumn 2021 we launched a long-term programme that delves into food justice, nourishment, growing and sustainable food systems. This strand of work has grown from the impact of the pandemic, and work with local groups to redistribute resources and support food parcels. This collective response threw up significant questions about the gaps between food production and access, and ideas of what ‘good food’ means for multiple communities. Nourishment invites artists, designers, activists, cooks, community organisers, gardeners, local people and groups to come together through a seasonal programme of residencies, meals, skillshares, discussions and events – creating space for imagining and implementing different systems.
Summer 2022: Picturing Food Justice Exhibition
This August, joins us for the ‘Picturing Food Justice’ exhibition - sharing photography produced through a ten-week participatory programme that addressed issues around food justice, particularly in Nottingham’s NG7 postcode area.
Despite the growing presence of food injustice across the country, the visual representation of these issues has been slow. Through a series of workshops led by photographer Kelly O’Brien with Jagdish Patel, participants learnt photography skills, to produce visual images of their ideas. The group created images to express their experiences of food injustice, and ideas about what food justice might look like - including the experiences of recent arrivals to Nottingham.

Spring season: April–May 2022
The spring season focused on sharing seeds and sharing knowledge - with a seed and plant swap, cooking and story-telling events, a film screening and our second ‘Round Table’ event. We will be using ideas gathered in each season as a starting point to plan future events and projects for the Nourishment programme. Also in May, we launched Picturing Food Justice - a ten week participatory photography programme.
Autumn season: October–November 2021
During the autumn season, we hosted workshops, a residency, the Recipes for Resistance Library and a farm visit. Thirty people gathered for ‘Round Table’, a collective meal and conversation where they shared their different experiences of food, an interest in food sovereignty and justice and enjoyed a shared meal.
